Josef Carlson - Optimization Lead
Tell us about yourself and your role at Svea Solar.
Hi! I'm Josef and have my background growing the startup Arboair, where I worked with great people scaling up our AI & drone solution for sustainable forestry. I love to read and hang out with my girlfriend & friends from Uni.
In Svea I work as Optimization lead, which means I make the design for our solar parks while also improving and optimizing everything related to the design such as how we build our parks more efficiently, how we maximize profits for our sites and how we best utilize novel technologies such as drones, solar trackers and large scale battery storage.
How is it like to work at Svea Solar?
The reason why I chose Svea was the welcoming culture and the opportunity to make a difference for the Energy future by working in a startup-like organization. I started at Svea with my master thesis on Techno-financial optimization of solar parks and continued with this work within the Utility team. I enjoy the opportunity I have to create my own role and collaborate with competent and fun people.
How does your team look like?
We at Utility work closely together to complete Sveas largest projects from first customer contact to first production to the grid. What is exciting is that my team (Engineering & Design) works at the center of the Utility team, starting out with sales & development to set projects on the right track early on. We also get to collaborate with the project managers and the site managers during the operations phase. This has naturally lead us to implement improvements in the sales/development phase which will help out in the later operations phase.
What's the biggest challange for your team?
To find the right talent to grow our team. If you are a passionate problem solver, don't hesitate to reach out!
What problems do you get the chance to solve in your daily work?
I get to tackle some of the most difficult technical problems that arise in Sveas largest projects, while also thinking strategically on how we hire and scale our team for solving the new problems of tomorrow.
Why did you choose to join Svea Solar?
Solar is clearly at the center of tomorrows sustainable society. If we can produce cheap electricity in a sustainable way, we can solve most other challenges by electrifying them. Svea has a great opportunity to make an impact here.
What does a typical day at Svea look like for you?
After I complete my run to work (I had to get that in here somehow..) I start off doing 4 hours of focused work before lunch were I complete a solar park design, optimize the technical & financial parameters of a solar park, run energy simulations or research novel technologies such as large scale batteries. During the afternoon I have meetings with my master thesis students, customers or other members of the Utility team.
Tell us something we don't know about you.
I am one of the two (self-appointed) Chief Party Officers in Utility. My latest achievement is organizing a trip to Trysil for 14 people from Utility!
What can't you live without in your daily work?
My Sony WH-1000XM4 noice canceling headphones.
What are you looking forward to the most in 2023?
To get new team members in the Engineering & design team and in the rest of Utility. I enjoy working with improvement work within the department and every time a new colleague joins I think it is a great opportunity to rethink our processes.
